Join information

If you are in 9th or 10th grade, you think your English is of a high standard, and you are interested in participating in the NIR School, please read the following information carefully and complete the application form below.

Background
The NIR School of the Heart is a comprehensive experiential program aimed at enriching the academic, cultural, social and personal development of promising teenagers throughout the Middle East.  Our select group of students is offered a top-quality interactive education in medical sciences, with an emphasis on cardiology, provided by world-class experts and with access to first-rate facilities.  By engaging the minds of students of several nationalities in a multi-cultural educational environment, the program aims to encourage them to communicate and share their knowledge, feelings and thoughts with one another, and to share these within their home communities.

The NIR School was established 1998.  It is an independent, non-profit, non-political organization supported in full by its founders, Dr. Judith Richter and Dr. Kobi Richter.

The NIR School looks forward to seeing its graduates become positive contributors to science and society, and hopes to play a constructive role in deepening cross-border social and professional relationships both today and in the future.

The Program
The program consists of four meetings along two years two meetings of about a week during the summer school vacation and two long weekends during winter.  The meetings take place in different places within the region.

There are two parts in the NIR School program the academic and the social:

In the academic program, you will learn about the human body and the heart, visit laboratories and hospitals and witness cardiology procedures.  You will be taught by leading cardiologists from around the world.  Upon completion of the program the students' achievements are accredited with an official diploma jointly issued by the NIR School and the Harvard-MIT Biomedical Engineering Center.

In the social program, you will have the opportunity to get to know your peers from neighboring countries and learn about their beliefs, traditions, fears and hopes.  We conduct discussions, workshops, go on trips and, of course, also have fun activities.

Social Involvement Program
If you are accepted to the NIR School, you are expected to serve your own community by volunteering in a place of your choice for at least 60 hours.  Volunteers of other groups have helped their community in places such as homes of troubled families, kindergartens, old age homes, hospitals, and many other social and medical institutions.

Graduates
By the year 2020, the NIR School has had over 750 graduates, and we maintain close contact with many of them. A large percentage of our graduates pursue academic careers; approximately 30% have chosen medical related studies.   Based on our strong belief in education, we assist our students in every possible way with their academic pursuits and personal goals and ambitions. Given the experience of the social and academic programs in the NIR School and the volunteer work in their home communities, we are proud that our graduates continue their commitment to peace and equality in their personal and professional lives.

Supervision
The school is run and guided by a professional team of educators and project coordinators.  During the meetings, you will be under 24-hour supervision by the staff.

Costs
Students who are accepted to the NIR School are supported by a fellowship, which covers the tuition, accommodations, meals and travel expenses for the four meetings.  A symbolic fee of 200$ will be required from each applicant.

Admission Process
Students are chosen based on their interest in science, their level of involvement in their home communities, their inter-personal skills and their command of the English language.

After reviewing all application forms, we invite a select number of candidates to a personal interview and an academic exam.  Shortly thereafter, we will inform you whether you have been accepted to the program.  If so, you and your parents will be invited to an information meeting in your country.

Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions.

Looking forward to hearing from you,

The NIR School Staff
